Calicut beach: Three beach tourism destinations in Kozhikode are set to undergo significant improvements, driven by increasing demand for better facilities and supported by special financial aid from the State government. Kappad, Butt Road, and Chaliyam beaches have been chosen for this facelift, based on recommendations from the District Tourism Promotion Council.

According to Tourism department officials, approximately ₹12 crore will be invested in the overall beautification and renovation of these sites. Kappad Beach, the only Blue Flag certified beach in Kerala, and Chaliyam Beach, selected for a model tourism project, will receive the largest portions of the funding.

Kappad Beach, which has seen a decline in visitor numbers due to neglected amenities such as rain shelters and footpaths, is slated for a ₹99.90 lakh upgrade. This beach is particularly vulnerable to sea erosion, which threatens the beach road during the monsoon season. The Harbour Engineering department will handle the renovation work based on the approved plan.

Butt Road Beach will see the revitalization of Bliss Park, with ₹96.50 lakh allocated for this purpose. The park’s appeal has diminished due to delays in repairing seating arrangements, paved footpaths, and rain shelters, but the planned improvements aim to restore its former charm.

Chaliyam Beach will undergo the most extensive development, with ₹9.5 crore earmarked for eco-friendly upgrades. This includes reducing the number of concrete structures and introducing international standards in facility development. Attractions at Chaliyam will feature thatched bamboo huts, beach umbrellas, rain shelters, food courts, and container comfort stations, all designed to enhance its appeal as a model beach tourism destination in northern Kerala.
